The Act of Driving, or Lack Thereof

So I’ve been back in the Northeast for close to a year and a half. Wow time really flies! I have learned many new things and re-learned many forgotten ones. But the biggest issue that I’ve found since being back is the horrendous driving that I come across every single day.

My drive to work in the morning is only 12 miles. So far in this short year alone I have seen 4 major accidents on the highway. When I say major I mean more than 4 cars involved. In each instance we were backed up for miles and 3 of the 4 happened on the other side of the highway. I can say unequivocally that the reason for every single accident was speed and tailgating!

I know that you want to get to your destination as fast as possible. The issue becomes that when you are speeding and following too close you don’t have enough time to stop. I always learned that the distance between you and the car in front of you is one car length for every ten miles an hour you are travelling. This is a just a rough estimate. More than likely you should actually put even more distance between you and the car in front of you.

Traffic in and around Boston for years has been some of the worst in the country. When it can take you an hour to go 20 miles it gets to you. The problem is that everyone speeds and people try to sneak into spots that aren’t big enough for a car to fit into. You also have roads that are too small and there are twists and turns and hills that you can’t see around.

If everyone drove with more courtesy and would think about someone other than himself or herself we would have less backups everyday because there wouldn’t be an accident to add to the mess. Most people like myself are looking forward to getting to their destination in one piece. I’m not looking to have an unscheduled colonoscopy which seems to happen all too often with drivers around here.

So it begins!

So this is blogging. I have finally decided to get back into writing and putting my ideas down for all to see. First off, let me tell you a little bit about me. I am a complete smart ass and enjoy sarcasm to the point that sometimes people don’t know if I’m serious or joking. This blog will be an extension of that mindset.

I am a die hard New England sports fan and follow all sports, but I am particularly fond of football. I have a passion for the game that rivals the players on the field. There are times that I need to walk away before my blood pressure goes sky high and I have a heart attack. I’ve gotten much better believe me, but there are still times that my wife, Christina, will ask me to calm down because I’m scaring the neighbors.

The next thing you should know is that I enjoy the arts. I will watch or listen to anything and give it my fair and honest opinion. I am currently in the process of watching every movie on the AFI Top 100 list and I am proud to say that I only have 37 more movies to go. Another movie goal of mine is to watch every Oscar winner and nominee. I am close to being halfway through with that list, but with 482 movies so far and more being added each year, it’s going to take a long time.

The last thing I will tell you about is my wife. Christina is the most amazing person I have ever met. She can make you laugh just by smiling at you. She also has a tendency to say some extremely funny things that I have taken the liberty of making a list out of. I don’t know where I would be without her and it is because of her that I have started this blog! Thank you my love for believing in me and being a good sport about my list of insane things you say.

This blog really is the prattling of an idiot. Everyday I have at least one good rant and I have felt for some time that if I don’t get the voices out my head it will eventually explode. There will be many blogs about sports and movie reviews and every once in awhile I will throw in a story from my list of “Endearing Things My Wife Says.” I hope you will have fun on this journey with me. We are on this world for so small a fraction of time and if I can make you laugh just once then I will have done some good in my life.
